Sierra Division 11 Participates in San Francisco Fleet Week Activities
The annual Fleet Week activities are a fine example of the many ways in which the Coast Guard Auxiliary can assist the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard relies on the Auxiliary to rapidly expand their capabilities when personnel needs rapidly expand. This is particularly true for events like Fleet Week when the Coast Guard is responsible for security for Bay Area waters. Increased security measures are now required.
North Shore Flotilla 1 Auxiliarists Angelo Perata, and Jack Leth traveled to San Francisco for the event. Reno Flotilla 3 sent two boats and 6 crew to assist the Coast Guard. Jim Kremsner, Tom Komadina, Leon Borden, Dennis Harms, Xavier Cipriano and Dave Young patrolled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday's events.

This photograph of a radar display gives a much better indication of the mammoth job entailed with maintaining a security perimeter in the area where US Navy vessels transit and aircraft perform their flights. The "box" is an area where vessel traffic is prohibited. This is the area that Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and Law Enforcement boats patrol to keep the "box" free of civilain traffic. The individual "blips" on the display are boats out for the Fleet Week activities.
